The Scanner™
The Scanner™ pattern keeps a close, constant watch on the body — trying to stay one step ahead of pain by never letting attention rest.
The Scanner™ pattern responds to uncertainty by monitoring closely. It’s a completely understandable response to inconsistent answers — but the mind rarely gets a break from watching.
What it looks like
Checking in on symptoms multiple times a day. Noticing every small change and wondering what it means.
Researching explanations, then researching the research. Feeling reassured briefly, then back to watching again.
Why it develops
Monitoring feels like control — if the body is being watched closely enough, surely nothing can go wrong unnoticed.
This kind of vigilance often starts as genuine care, but the nervous system rarely gets a break from scanning for threat.
What actually helps
Peace of mind is rarely found by watching closer. It’s found by trusting more — gradually widening attention back toward life, rather than narrowing it further onto symptoms.
Practising noticing less is a skill, not a risk.
Recognising the Scanner™ pattern makes it possible to practise noticing less, on purpose, and give the mind evidence that it’s safe to look away.
